Winter car maintenance is important if you want your vehicle to last a long time. Although safety is a consideration which you have to think about all year round, it is also extremely crucial that you know how to winterize your car. If you do not want to end up spending a lot of money on unexpected repairs because of the weather, you need to check out these maintenance tips.

Always check your antifreeze. Antifreeze is a crucial part of the car’s winter protection. Your car should have equal parts of water and antifreeze. You can check the mixture yourself by getting a tester for only $5 and you can also have it checked by your local service station. Antifreeze will remove heat from the car engine and prevents the buildup of rust. It prevents water in the radiator from freezing during winter.

Tire care and maintenance is also crucial. Before going out for a drive, make sure that you check the tire gauge. The tire pressure lowers when the temperature drops. This is due to the contraction of air. Always make sure that the tires are in good condition and if you will be travelling through areas with heavy snow, you might want to get snow tires. Snow tires can give you better traction during winter.
